Lee Shanahan, Food Technologist – Confectionery on his role at TasteTech... if you thought it would entail eating chocolate, then you'd be right!
What’s your background and why did you want to work here?
I have spent many years in the food and sales industries, managing coffee retail cafe brands and b2b book sales being just some of the interesting roles I have been lucky enough to be involved with.
What’s it like to work at TasteTech?
TasteTech is an exciting and rewarding place to work and as a family business you are made to feel part of that family. Every day brings new and interesting challenges, as our customers keep us busy with new ideas or problems to solve. As the food technologist for confectionery my role enables me to be fully immersed in the world of all things sweet, whether it’s chewing gum, toffee, jellies or chocolate, which is a particular passion of mine. As part of my role, I advise companies on how best to apply our products in some of the tastiest treats. I consider myself very lucky to be working with very high profile and global brands. I am also TasteTech’s Chocolatier and that obviously comes with lots of benefits…. chocolate will never be boring!
What does a typical day look like for a Food Technologist?
Every day is different, but I’m most often found in our Lab making various confectionery for numerous customer projects, testing, tasting and inputting ideas at meetings where we discuss customer’s needs. Being a food company there is obviously a lot of paperwork to ensure everything is done properly, as well as answering technical questions and visiting customer sites to better understand their objectives and processes.
What's the best part of your job?
It has to be chocolate! Chocolate. And Chocolate. No seriously, it’s pretty clear I love working with chocolate but one of my favourite elements is the direct interaction with customers, building relationships which really help us to better understand what our customers’ need – as well as creating new innovations for…. Chocolate!
We have to ask.... what's the least favourite part of your job?
Making confectionery can be very messy and unfortunately I can’t expect anyone else to clear up after me!...it just has to be done but on the upside I have to taste what I make to ensure it meets customers’ expectations – so the eating part is no hardship!
Why would you recommend people work at TasteTech?
TasteTech is big enough to be taken seriously but small enough to care about each and every one of our customers, as an employee you really matter, you can really make a difference here and the reward in job satisfaction would be hard to find elsewhere.
